TRACK REVIEW: Ultraísta – “Static Light”

Written for DIY

Opening with a shuffling drum line that’s dropped a beat behind it and a sharp, refrigerator-aping hum bubbling underneath, it seems like producer Nigel Godrich hasn’t strayed far outside his frequent charges Radiohead’s sphere of influence. We should know better than that, though. “Static Light” comes into its own as singer Laura Bettinson’s vocals twist about themself and a very eighties synth solo crops up at the end, making it poppier than Yorke and co. usually are. There’s still room for a bit of unnamed dread to seep in, though, as Bettinson sings of trauma in social interaction.
