TRACK REVIEW: Beck – “I Just Started Hating Some People Today”

Written for DIY

Oh, we remember Beck! Glad he’s stopped fannying about with Record Clubs and contributions to soppy vampire films’ soundtracks. This isn’t much like Odelay. It’s not even much like Sea Change, his most “normal” album. It’s Nashville country, played straight, with Beck crooning his oddball lyrics like he’s Kenny Rogers. There’s a bit of a garage rock freak out at the end, and some creepy spoken word, but up until that point this was the weirdest thing Beck’s done, in light of the rest of his back catalogue, and the weirdest part about it is that it actually works.
