TRACK REVIEW: Jamie xx/Gil Scott-Heron “NY Is Killing Me”

Written for DIY

Gil Scott-Heron sadly passed away this year, just as he was emerging from an extended wilderness period with I’m New Here. His last hurrah came in the form of remix of that album in We’re New Here; Jamie Smith, manning the controls during downtime from his xx dayjob, used Scott-Heron’s vocals sparingly, but to great effect. “NY is Killing Me” is no different; said rugged voice emerges from the shadows to issue the titular stark warning, whilst shuddering bass creates a feeling of urban dread and synthesised string stabs recall both car horns in claustrophobic rush hour traffic and the shower scene from Psycho.
