TRACK REVIEW: James Blake – “The Wilhelm Scream”

Written for DIY

This song was, for the majority of the record-buying public, their first exposure to the producer wunderkind which wasn’t Feist-related. Lovely though his rendition of “Limit To Your Love” is, it sits a little awkwardly amidst the ambient sounds of Blake’s self-titled album. “The Wilhelm Scream”, meanwhile, is the epitome of the post-xx, post-dubstep, post-whatever sound he constructed. Minimal electronica builds to an bass-shredding climax towards the end; but it’s the voice that really stands out. Blake has cited influences from Bon Iver to old soul singers, helping to make this the most affecting of his Emotional Dance Music.
